Buddy Holly Died Today
03:52
|
|||
I saw the news first on Facebook
In some posts from a couple of friends
Pretty soon the word was everywhere
Another legend met his end
He died on his ranch down in Texas
With children and grandkids from far and near
He said his last words, breathed his last breath
His story ended in his 85th year
CHORUS:
Buddy Holly died today
His story will not fade away
He sung his last song -- left us to rave on
Buddy Holly died today
In ‘61, the critics had doubts
When he took the stage at Carnegie Hall
But when Lenny raised his arms and the Philharmonic played
The hardest heart he did enthrall
Boundaries fell that night on the stage
As the aristocracy clutched their pearls
When the final notes faded out
Crickets were heard all over the world
CHORUS
They say that rock’n’roll is just a kid’s game
And he’d just get left far behind
Time and time again, he’d prove them wrong
Ahead of the curve every time
The summer sun sparkled on his Stratocaster
As he dramatically raised his right arm
He brought it down, strummed his first chord
And blew them away down at Yasgur’s Farm
I saw him first on MTV
Doing that unplugged thing
He was old but he was cool
He’s the reason that I wanted to sing
He never stopped writing, he never stopped touring
You’d never know he was a geezer
When once again he hit the top of the charts
In ‘98, on an album backed by Weezer
It’s not that his life didn’t have tragedy
It’s not that he didn’t know any pain
When he was just 21 years old
His bassist Waylon was killed in a plane
CHORUS with tag

Gershwin's 7th Symphony
04:17
|
|||
I was just 6 years old,
glued to my TV
PBS was showing
Gershwin’s 7th Symphony
It was live, straight from Washington
On the Kennedy Center stage
Reagan, fresh from the hospital
Spoke before a single note was played
He said no that bullet could ever keep him
From hearing history
And he had to show up in person
for Gershwin’s 7th Symphony
Program notes were written by Ira
Slava held the baton
The composer sat in the very first row
Kay Gershwin on his arm
I was hundreds of miles away
But it felt like they were playing for me
Something stirred inside of me
When I heard Gershwin’s 7th symphony
The brass blew loud and triumphant
The strings sounded heavenly
The melodies served as a reminder
Of all that America could be
It had been almost six long decades
Since we first heard his Rhapsody
But nothing could have ever prepared us
For Gershwin’s 7th symphony

Robert Johnson in 1972

It’s been a long time since I left the delta behind
It’s been a real long time since I left the delta behind
I headed through those crossroads and like a hellhound I went flyin’
I sung my heart out at Spirituals to Swing
I sung my heart out at Spirituals to Swing
Mr. Hammond said the critics wrote that I was the genuine thing
I moved to Chicago and plugged in my guitar
I moved to sweet home Chicago and plugged in this here guitar
I shook the floors and the ceilings from Chess to the Southside bars
I went over to England and sang for those little lads
I flew over to Europe and played for those little British lads
As Sonny Boy said, now they all play the blues so bad
Listen here children, and do as I have done
Listen here children, and do as I have done
There are other ways to die, other than at the barrel of a gun
If you messin’ around with some other man’s valentine
If you foolin’ around with some other fellow’s valentine
Check your corn whiskey twice – it might just have a dose of strychnine.
